Quality Process

Our 12-Point Inspection Checklist

Every used pallet that enters our facility at 4691 E Commerce Ave, Fresno undergoes a comprehensive 12-point inspection before it is graded and made available for sale. This process ensures you receive exactly the quality you are paying for.

Pallets that fail inspection are either repaired to meet grade standards or dismantled for lumber recovery. Nothing leaves our yard that does not meet its rated specifications.

Refurbishment Process

Pallets that do not initially pass inspection are sent to our repair line. Our refurbishment process restores structural integrity while maintaining cost effectiveness.

1

Disassembly

Damaged boards are removed using pneumatic pry bars. Salvageable boards are sorted for reuse.

2

Board Replacement

New or reclaimed boards matching the original dimensions and thickness are installed.

3

Nail Reseating

Loose or protruding nails are driven flush or replaced with ring-shank fasteners for superior hold.

4

Stringer Repair

Cracked or split stringers are reinforced with companion boards or replaced entirely.

5

Surface Cleaning

Pallets are cleaned of debris, loose bark, and surface contamination. Power washing available for food-grade applications.

6

Final Grading

Repaired pallets are re-inspected and assigned the appropriate grade based on their post-repair condition.

Compliance

Industry Standards & Compliance

Our used pallets meet or exceed all relevant industry standards. Here are the key certifications and regulations we comply with.

ISPM-15 (Heat Treatment)

The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 requires all wood packaging materials in international trade to be heat treated to 56 degrees Celsius core temperature for a minimum of 30 minutes. This eliminates invasive pests that could spread across borders.

Our Status: Available on Grade A and B used pallets. Each ISPM-15 compliant pallet carries the official HT stamp with our facility registration number.

NWPCA Grading Standards

The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association defines the uniform grading criteria used across the U.S. pallet industry. Their classification system establishes the benchmarks for Grade A, B, and C designations based on structural condition, appearance, and load capacity.

Our Status: All Fresno Pallets grading follows NWPCA Uniform Standard for Wood Pallets. Our inspectors are trained to NWPCA guidelines.

OSHA Workplace Safety

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets standards for safe pallet handling, stacking, and storage. Compliance ensures that pallets do not create workplace hazards through protruding nails, splintered boards, or unstable stacking.

Our Status: All pallets are inspected for protruding nails, excessive splinters, and structural defects that could create safety risks in your facility.

FDA Food Contact Standards

For pallets used in food and pharmaceutical supply chains, FDA 21 CFR regulations require that materials in contact with food products be free from contamination and safe for use. Clean, uncontaminated pallets are essential for compliance.

Our Status: Grade A pallets can be supplied as food-grade clean upon request. Documentation available for regulatory audits.

Quality Awareness

Common Defects & How We Address Them

Understanding pallet defects helps you choose the right grade. Here are the most common issues we encounter and how our process handles each one.

Broken Deck Boards

Common

Cause: Forklift impact or overloading

Our fix: Broken boards are replaced with matching lumber. Grade A pallets have zero broken boards; Grade B allows 1-2 repairs; Grade C allows 3+.

Split Stringers

Moderate

Cause: Excessive weight or improper forklift entry

Our fix: Split stringers are reinforced with companion boards nailed alongside the damaged area, or replaced entirely for Grade A pallets.

Protruding Nails

Safety Critical

Cause: Impact damage, repeated handling

Our fix: All nails are inspected and driven flush or replaced. This is a safety-critical checkpoint — no grade tolerance for protruding nails.

Surface Contamination

Variable

Cause: Chemical spills, food residue, mold

Our fix: Contaminated pallets are cleaned, power-washed, or rejected. Pallets with chemical contamination are never sold — they are dismantled for clean lumber.

Warping / Twist

Common

Cause: Moisture exposure, sun drying

Our fix: Pallets with significant warp (>1/2" across the deck) are rejected from Grade A and B. Minor warping is acceptable in Grade C for ground-level use.

Missing Boards

Common

Cause: Damage during handling or previous use

Our fix: Missing boards are replaced to restore full deck coverage. All grades require complete board sets — no missing boards are acceptable in any grade.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about our used pallet products, grading, and ordering process.

How are used pallets graded?

Every pallet goes through our 12-point inspection process. Based on structural condition, appearance, load capacity, and number of repairs, each pallet is assigned Grade A (premium), Grade B (standard), or Grade C (economy). Pallets that do not meet Grade C standards are dismantled for lumber recovery.

Can used pallets be used for international shipping?

Yes, Grade A and Grade B used pallets can be heat-treated to ISPM-15 standards for international shipping. Each treated pallet receives an official HT stamp. Grade C pallets are generally not recommended for export due to inconsistent condition.

How many times can a used pallet be reused?

A Grade A used pallet typically has 5-10 more trips in it. Grade B pallets average 3-7 more trips, and Grade C pallets are best for 1-3 more uses. Actual lifespan depends on load weight, handling conditions, and storage environment.

Do you deliver, or is it pickup only?

We offer both. Pickup is available at our facility at 4691 E Commerce Ave, Fresno, CA 93725. Delivery is available throughout Central California, with free delivery on orders over 200 pallets within Fresno County. Flatbed and curtain-side trucks available.

What is the difference between a stringer and a block pallet?

Stringer pallets use three parallel boards (stringers) as their structural base and offer two-way or partial four-way forklift entry. Block pallets use nine blocks at strategic points and provide full four-way entry from any direction. Most of our used inventory is stringer-style.

Can I mix grades in a single order?

Absolutely. Many customers order Grade A for customer-facing deliveries and Grade B or C for internal warehouse use. We can split your order across multiple grades and deliver them together.

Do used pallets come with any warranty?

Yes. All used pallets carry a 30-day structural replacement guarantee. If any pallet does not meet the grade specification at the time of delivery, we will replace it at no cost. Contact us at info@fresnopallets.com to initiate a warranty claim.

How quickly can I get used pallets?

Standard sizes in Grade B are almost always available for same-day or next-day pickup. Delivery typically adds 1-2 business days depending on location and truck availability. Large orders (1,000+) may require 3-5 days for staging.

Are your used pallets safe for food products?

Grade A pallets can be supplied as food-grade clean upon request, suitable for food distribution and storage. They are visually inspected for contamination and can be power-washed. For direct food contact applications, we recommend new pallets or plastic pallets.

What happens to pallets that do not pass inspection?

Pallets that cannot be repaired to at least Grade C standards are dismantled. Usable boards are salvaged for repair stock, and the remaining material is chipped for mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel. Nothing goes to the landfill.

Can I sell my old pallets back to you?

Yes. We actively buy used pallets in any condition. We pay competitive rates based on size, condition, and quantity. Visit our Sell Pallets page or email info@fresnopallets.com with details about what you have available.

How should I store used pallets to maximize their lifespan?

Store pallets on a flat, level surface off the ground. Keep them under cover if possible to prevent moisture absorption and sun damage. Stack no more than 15 empty pallets high. Avoid storing near heat sources or chemicals. Proper storage can extend pallet life by 2-3x.
