Understanding Weight Capacities

Static Capacity refers to the maximum weight a pallet can support while stationary on a flat surface. Dynamic Capacity is the maximum weight the pallet can handle while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. Dynamic capacity is always lower because the load is distributed unevenly during transport.

Racking Capacity is typically 50-60% of static capacity and represents the maximum weight when the pallet is stored on warehouse racking (supported only at the edges). Always select pallets based on dynamic capacity if the load will be moved, or racking capacity if the pallet will be placed on selective, drive-in, or flow racking systems.

European Standard Sizes (EUR/EPAL)

European pallets follow the EUR/EPAL standard managed by the European Pallet Association. These pallets are designed for the European rail gauge and are widely used in international shipping. If your goods are destined for European markets, these are the sizes you need to know.

EUR 1 — The European Standard

The EUR 1 pallet (800 x 1200 mm) is the backbone of European logistics. It is designed to fit perfectly in standard European trucks and rail cars. Approximately 500 million EUR 1 pallets are in circulation across Europe, making it the most widely used pool pallet in the world. Its four-way entry design allows efficient handling from any direction. The EPAL stamp guarantees consistent quality and dimensions across all licensed manufacturers.

EUR 6 — The Display Pallet

At exactly half the footprint of the EUR 1, the EUR 6 pallet is designed for retail display purposes. It fits perfectly into supermarket aisles and can be placed directly on the sales floor. Two EUR 6 pallets combine to occupy the same footprint as one EUR 1, ensuring seamless integration with existing logistics infrastructure. Increasingly popular in the US for club stores and big-box retail promotional displays.

Asia-Pacific & Australian Standards

If you are shipping to markets in Asia, Australia, or the Pacific Rim, these are the pallet standards used in those regions. As Fresno is a major gateway for Pacific trade, many of our clients need pallets that conform to these specifications.

ISPM-15 Requirement for International Shipping

All wood pallets used in international shipping must comply with ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15). This requires heat treatment to a core temperature of 56 degrees C (132.8 F) for a minimum of 30 minutes, and each pallet must bear the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) stamp. Fresno Pallets operates an ISPM-15 compliant heat treatment chamber and can process and stamp pallets for any international destination. Non-compliant pallets risk quarantine, destruction, or return at the destination port.

Container Fit Calculations

Knowing how many pallets fit in a shipping container is essential for optimizing freight costs. Here are the pallet counts for the most common pallet sizes in standard shipping containers.

20ft Container

Interior: 19'4" x 7'8" x 7'10"

Max payload: 44,000 lbs. Best for heavy, dense cargo within weight limits.

40ft Container

Interior: 39'5" x 7'8" x 7'10"

Max payload: 59,000 lbs. Most common container for international shipping.

53ft Trailer

Interior: 52'6" x 8'2" x 9'0"

Max payload: 45,000 lbs. Standard US domestic trucking trailer. Highest pallet count.

Truck Loading Configurations

Maximize your freight efficiency by understanding how different pallet sizes load into standard US trucks. Proper pallet selection can mean the difference between 20 and 30 pallets per truck — a 50% efficiency gain.

48" x 40" in 53ft Trailer

26 pallets

13 rows of 2 pallets (turned sideways)

The 48" x 40" GMA pallet is designed specifically for the standard US 53ft trailer. Two pallets placed side by side (40" + 40" = 80") fit within the 98.5" interior width with clearance. 13 rows of 2 fit the 52.5 ft length.

48" x 48" in 53ft Trailer

22 pallets

11 rows of 2 pallets

The wider 48" x 48" pallet reduces rows due to length but still fits 2 across (48" + 48" = 96") within the 98.5" width. You lose 4 pallets compared to GMA — consider whether you truly need the extra width.

40" x 40" in 53ft Trailer

30 pallets

15 rows of 2 pallets

The compact 40" x 40" dairy pallet allows 15 rows because the 40" length uses less trailer space per row. At 30 pallets per truck, this is one of the most efficient loading configurations available.

EUR 1 in European Truck

33 pallets

11 rows of 3 pallets

EUR 1 pallets (800mm wide) are designed so that 3 fit across a standard European truck (2.44m interior = 3 x 800mm). This three-across configuration is unique to the European standard and maximizes European truck utilization.

Mixed Loading Strategy

Varies

Combine sizes strategically

For mixed-size orders, our logistics team can design loading plans that combine different pallet sizes to maximize trailer utilization. For example, alternating rows of 48x40 and 48x48 pallets can fill gaps that uniform loading would leave empty.

Double-Stacking

Up to 2x count

Stack 2 high when weight allows

For lightweight products, double-stacking pallets effectively doubles your per-truck capacity. A 53ft trailer can hold 52 double-stacked GMA pallets if the total weight stays under 45,000 lbs and the product can support stacking forces.

Stacking Guidelines & Safety

Proper pallet stacking is essential for warehouse safety, product protection, and efficient space utilization. Follow these guidelines to maximize storage density while maintaining safety standards.

Maximum Stack Height

OSHA recommends a maximum stack height of 15 feet for stable loads. Most warehouses limit stacking to 3-4 pallets high for hand-stacked products. For uniform, shrink-wrapped loads on standard GMA pallets, 4-high stacking is generally safe if the total weight does not exceed the bottom pallet's static capacity.

Column vs. Interlocking Stacking

Column stacking (boxes aligned vertically) provides maximum crush strength — up to 3x stronger than interlocking patterns. Use column stacking for heavy or fragile products. Interlocking (brick pattern) provides better lateral stability but reduces crush strength. Choose based on your product weight and handling conditions.

Pyramid Rule

Never stack a heavier pallet on top of a lighter one. Always place the heaviest pallets at the bottom and decrease weight as you go up. If pallet weights vary significantly in your operation, use racking rather than floor stacking to eliminate crush risk entirely.

Overhang Prevention

Products should never overhang the pallet edge by more than 1 inch on any side. Overhang creates crush points, interferes with racking, and can cause products to fall during handling. If your products overhang, consider a larger pallet size rather than accepting the risk.

Stretch Wrapping

All stacked pallets should be stretch-wrapped with a minimum of 3 revolutions at the base and top, with 70-100% overlap. Machine wrapping provides the most consistent tension. For tall or heavy loads, use corner boards and top caps under the wrap to prevent crushing and maintain stack integrity.

Floor Surface Requirements

Pallet stacks must be placed on level, dry, clean floors. Uneven surfaces can cause stacks to lean and topple. Maintain minimum 4-foot clearance from sprinkler heads per fire code. Keep aisles clear for forklift access and emergency egress per OSHA requirements.

E-Commerce & Fulfillment

48" x 40" (GMA)

Amazon, FedEx, and UPS fulfillment centers require standard GMA pallets. Grade B or better is typically acceptable. CHEP blue and PECO red pool pallets are common in this sector but we provide equivalent quality at lower cost.

Construction & Building

48" x 48" or Custom

Oversized and custom pallets are common for building materials, lumber bundles, drywall, and roofing materials. Heavy-duty construction with reinforced stringers required. We build custom pallets rated for loads up to 10,000 lbs.

How to Choose the Right Pallet Size

1. Consider Your Product Dimensions

Start by measuring your product cartons or containers. Ideally, your products should fit on the pallet with minimal overhang (no more than 1 inch on any side) and no wasted space. Overhang creates crush points during stacking and transport, while underhang wastes valuable space. Calculate how many cartons fit per layer and how the pallet footprint aligns with your box dimensions. A properly sized pallet should achieve 85-95% surface area utilization.

2. Know Your Weight Requirements

Calculate the total weight of your loaded pallet, including the pallet itself, all product layers, and any stretch wrap or securing materials. Always reference the dynamic capacity (not static) if the pallet will be moved by forklift or pallet jack. For racked storage, you will also need to consider the racking capacity of the pallet, which is typically 50-60% of the static capacity. Heavy loads may require reinforced pallets with additional stringers or blocks.

3. Match Your Transportation Mode

Standard US trucks have an interior width of 98.5 inches. Two 48" x 40" pallets placed side by side occupy 80 inches, leaving room for loading. A standard 20-foot container fits 10 GMA pallets; a 40-foot container holds 20; and a 53-foot trailer fits 26. For European destinations, EUR pallets are optimized for European truck dimensions (2.44m interior width) and rail gauges. Plan your pallet size to maximize the cubic utilization of your transport mode.

4. Check Retailer and Receiver Requirements

Many large retailers, distributors, and warehouses have strict pallet specifications. Walmart, Costco, Amazon, and most major grocery chains require the 48" x 40" GMA pallet. Some also mandate specific pallet grades (Grade A or B) and may require heat-treated pallets bearing the ISPM-15 stamp. Always verify your receiver's requirements before ordering pallets to avoid costly rejections at the dock.

5. Factor In Storage and Racking

Your warehouse racking system is designed for specific pallet dimensions. Standard selective racking in the US accommodates 48" x 40" pallets. If you use a different size, verify that your racking beams, uprights, and clearances are compatible. Drive-in, push-back, and flow racking systems are especially sensitive to pallet size variations. Using the wrong size can compromise structural integrity and create safety hazards.

6. Think About Sustainability

At Fresno Pallets, we encourage businesses to consider the environmental impact of their pallet choices. Standard sizes are more easily recycled and repaired because replacement parts are readily available. Odd-sized pallets often end up in landfills because they cannot be reintegrated into standard pallet pools. Choosing a common size means your pallets can be reused, repaired, and recycled many times over, significantly reducing your carbon footprint.
