Understanding Pallet Grades

Pallet grading is a classification system that indicates the condition, structural integrity, and cosmetic appearance of a used pallet. Grades range from A (premium) to Economy (lowest cost), with each tier offering a different balance of quality, reliability, and price.

Choosing the right grade depends on your specific application. Food-grade products destined for major retailers require Grade A, while pallets used for internal warehouse transfers may only need Grade C. Understanding these distinctions can save your business significant money without compromising operational safety.

A

Grade A — Premium

Highest quality used pallet

Characteristics

  • Like-new condition with no significant damage or repairs
  • All boards intact with no cracks, splits, or missing pieces
  • No protruding nails, splinters, or sharp edges
  • Clean appearance, free of stains, mold, and contamination
  • Full structural integrity with original weight capacity

Best For

Food and pharmaceutical products, retail distribution to major chains (Walmart, Costco, Target), export shipments, automated warehouse systems, and any application where appearance and consistency are critical.

Pricing: Highest tier. Typically 40–60% less than new pallets while delivering near-new performance.

B

Grade B — Standard

Most popular choice for general use

Characteristics

  • Good condition with minor cosmetic imperfections
  • May have one or two repaired boards (professionally replaced)
  • Minor staining or discoloration is acceptable
  • Full structural integrity maintained
  • Shows signs of prior use but remains fully functional

Best For

General warehousing and distribution, manufacturing facilities, B2B shipments where appearance is secondary, internal plant transfers, and most standard shipping applications.

Pricing: Mid-range. The best value for most businesses. Typically 50–70% less than new pallets.

C

Grade C — Utility

Functional at the lowest practical grade

Characteristics

  • Visible wear with multiple repairs or replaced boards
  • May have noticeable staining, weathering, or discoloration
  • Structurally sound but with reduced aesthetic appeal
  • Minor dimensional variations between pallets in a batch
  • Safe to use with adequate weight capacity for most loads

Best For

One-way shipments, internal warehouse use, heavy industrial applications where cosmetics are irrelevant, landscaping projects, temporary storage, and applications where pallets are unlikely to be returned.

Pricing: Budget-friendly. Typically 60–80% less than new pallets.

EC

Economy — Budget

Maximum savings for basic needs

Characteristics

  • Heavy wear with extensive repairs throughout
  • Mixed board colors and widths from multiple repair cycles
  • Functional but with reduced weight capacity
  • Significant cosmetic issues (stains, weathering, rough texture)
  • Inspected for safety but not for appearance

Best For

One-time use shipments, construction site material staging, firewood or kindling, DIY projects and furniture building, garden beds, emergency or temporary applications, and any scenario where cost is the primary consideration.

Pricing: Lowest cost. Typically 70–90% less than new pallets.
