Step by Step

Our 8-Step Recycling Process

From pickup to delivery, every step is optimized for maximum sustainability and minimum waste. Our facility processes over 30,000 pallets per month through this comprehensive system.

Step 01

Collection & Intake

We pick up pallets from your location — any quantity, any condition. Our fleet services the entire Central Valley with scheduled and on-demand pickups. Each incoming load is weighed, documented, and assigned a tracking number for full traceability through our recycling system.

Average intake: 800-1,200 pallets per day across all collection routes.

Step 02

Initial Sorting

Every pallet is visually inspected and sorted by size, type (stringer vs. block), and overall condition. Pallets that are structurally sound and only need minor cosmetic attention are fast-tracked to the cleaning and redistribution stage, minimizing processing time.

Sorting throughput: 150-200 pallets per hour per sorting line.

Step 03

Grading & Classification

Sorted pallets receive a formal grade classification — Grade A (premium), Grade B (standard), or Grade C (economy). This grading follows NWPCA industry standards and determines the pallet's next destination: direct resale, repair and resale, or component reclamation.

Our grading accuracy rate exceeds 98% through trained inspectors.

Step 04

Disassembly & Component Recovery

Damaged pallets are carefully disassembled using pneumatic pry bars and automated dismantling equipment. Usable boards, stringers, blocks, and fasteners are separated and sorted by dimension. Reusable nails are collected; bent or corroded nails are sent to metal recycling.

We recover usable components from 85%+ of disassembled pallets.

Step 05

Repair & Reassembly

Pallets flagged for repair receive new boards, reinforced stringers, and fresh fasteners as needed. Our repair technicians follow NWPCA nailing patterns and use pneumatic nail guns for consistent, reliable results. Each repaired pallet is rebuilt to original load-bearing specifications.

Average repair time: 3-5 minutes per pallet for standard repairs.

Step 06

Wood Reclamation

Wood that cannot be reused as pallet components is processed through our industrial grinder. The resulting material is sorted by particle size and moisture content, then channeled into secondary markets: landscape mulch, animal bedding, playground surfacing, or biomass fuel pellets.

Zero wood goes to landfill — 100% is reclaimed into secondary products.

Step 07

Quality Control Inspection

Recycled pallets undergo a rigorous 12-point inspection before they are approved for sale. Inspectors verify load capacity (static and dynamic), structural integrity, dimensional accuracy (length, width, height within 1/4-inch tolerance), fastener condition, and surface condition including protruding nails and splinter risk.

Reject rate: less than 2% of pallets that reach this stage.

Step 08

Stacking, Storage & Distribution

Approved pallets are sorted by grade and size, stacked in standard bundles of 15-20 units, and stored in our covered warehouse until delivery. Our inventory management system tracks every pallet from intake to delivery, ensuring FIFO rotation and consistent supply for our customers across Central California.

Warehouse capacity: 25,000+ pallets in covered, dry storage at any time.

Recovery Metrics

Material Recovery Rates

We track every material stream that enters and exits our facility. Here is exactly where your pallets go when we recycle them.

Whole Pallet Reuse42%

Pallets in good condition that are cleaned, inspected, and resold as-is.

Repaired & Resold31%

Pallets that receive board or stringer repairs before being sold as recycled.

Component Reclamation12%

Boards and stringers salvaged for use in repairing other pallets.

Mulch & Ground Cover8%

Clean wood chips processed for landscaping and playground surfacing.

Animal Bedding4%

Fine wood shavings produced for equine and livestock bedding.

Biomass Fuel2.2%

Remaining wood processed into fuel pellets for biomass energy generation.

Metal Recycling0.6%

Nails, staples, and metal banding collected and sent to metal recyclers.

Landfill (Contaminated)0.2%

Only hazardous-contaminated materials that cannot be safely processed.

Our Zero-Waste Commitment

Fresno Pallets is committed to achieving a true zero-waste-to-landfill operation. Currently, only 0.2% of incoming material ends up in landfill — exclusively items contaminated with hazardous substances that cannot be safely processed. Everything else finds a second life.

Our goal is to reach 100% diversion by partnering with specialized hazardous material processors who can safely handle the remaining fraction. We are on track to meet this target by the end of 2026.

Our Facility

Equipment & Technology

Our 25,000-square-foot recycling facility at 4691 E Commerce Ave, Fresno, CA 93725 is equipped with commercial-grade machinery designed for high-volume, high-efficiency pallet processing.

Automated Pallet Dismantler

High-speed disassembly machine that separates boards from stringers without damaging reusable components. Processes up to 60 pallets per hour.

Industrial Wood Grinder

Horizontal grinder that converts non-reusable wood into uniform chips and mulch. Output: 15 tons per hour of processed material.

Pneumatic Nail Guns

Industrial-grade coil nailers used for all pallet assembly and repair. Consistent nailing depth and pattern every time.

Band Saw Station

Precision cutting station for trimming boards to exact dimensions. Used for custom pallet sizes and component preparation.

Moisture Meters

Digital pin-type moisture meters verify wood moisture content stays below 25% for quality assurance on all outgoing pallets.
