Meeting Fresno's Agricultural Pallet Needs

3 min read

Fresno County holds the remarkable distinction of being the single most productive agricultural county in the United States, generating over $8 billion in farm-gate value annually. This extraordinary output spans hundreds of commodities, from almonds and grapes to tomatoes, cotton, and dairy. Behind every truckload of produce that leaves the Valley, there is a pallet, and the agricultural sector's demand for pallets is both massive and highly specialized.

Serving the agricultural pallet market requires more than just having pallets in stock. It demands understanding crop-specific requirements, harvest timing, food safety regulations, and the unique logistics challenges of perishable product shipping. Local pallet providers play a vital role in keeping the Valley's agricultural engine running.

Crop-Specific Pallet Requirements

Different agricultural products impose different demands on pallets. Tree fruit and table grapes require clean, splinter-free pallets that will not contaminate or damage delicate produce. Many packers specify Grade A or new pallets for premium fruit destined for retail. Nut crops like almonds and pistachios, while less delicate, are packed in heavy bags or bulk containers that demand strong structural performance from the pallet.

Dairy operations need pallets that can handle extremely heavy loads, as a pallet of milk or cheese cases can weigh 2,500 pounds or more. These pallets must also meet food safety standards since they are used in cold storage and processing environments. Tomato growers shipping to canneries may accept lower-grade pallets since the product is being processed rather than sold fresh, but they need enormous quantities during the brief but intense harvest window.

Understanding these crop-specific requirements allows a knowledgeable pallet supplier to recommend the right product for each application, ensuring that growers and packers are not overpaying for unnecessary quality or underspecifying and risking problems.

Food Safety and Compliance

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the Produce Safety Rule have increased scrutiny on all components of the food supply chain, including pallets. While there is no specific regulation that mandates a particular pallet grade for food use, the general requirement to prevent contamination extends to shipping platforms. Pallets used for food products should be clean, free of mold and visible contamination, structurally sound to prevent product damage, and traceable to their source.

For products destined for export, ISPM-15 heat treatment adds another layer of compliance. Much of Fresno County's agricultural output is exported to Asia, Europe, and other international markets, requiring treated pallets with proper IPPC stamps. Having a local supplier with certified heat treatment capability eliminates the need to source compliant pallets from distant providers.

The Volume Challenge

Agricultural pallet demand in the Fresno area is characterized by extreme volume requirements concentrated in narrow time windows. A single large packing house can consume 5,000-10,000 pallets per week during peak harvest. Multiply that across hundreds of packing operations in the region, and the total demand during peak season can exceed the normal supply capacity of local providers.

Meeting this demand requires year-round inventory building, strong relationships with lumber suppliers, and efficient repair and recycling operations that maximize the available supply of quality pallets. It also requires flexibility: a late frost that delays harvest by two weeks, or an unexpected heat wave that accelerates picking, can shift demand patterns dramatically with little notice.

Fresno Pallets prepares for the agricultural season year-round, building inventory reserves during the winter months and maintaining relationships with multiple lumber suppliers to ensure raw material availability. Our repair operation runs at full capacity ahead of harvest season, refurbishing pallets that have been returned from previous seasons to supplement our new pallet supply.
